International Education, 2001-present
Professional development and follow-up for over 100 Central American teachers studying for a year in the United States, and then returning to provide leadership in their home countries and communities. Through the USAID CASS (Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships) Program, housed at Palo Alto College, San Antonio, administered through Georgetown University. Activities include courses in learning theory, child development, special needs, reading, and other areas, and practicum supervision and assistance in local San Antonio schools (in Spanish.).
Balanced Literacy, 1996-present
Professional development, demonstrations, coaching and other services to improve reading proficiency of diverse K-12 learners in Title I schools through the implementation of a research-based program. Highlight: In May, 2001, in LaMarque ISD, 93% of all kindergarten students passed TPRI (in contrast to the 70% expectation.) Professional development, materials development, and other services to teach teachers to integrate the arts across the curriculum to effectively promote the learning and success of diverse learners. Follow-up courses gave greater emphasis to language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, early childhood, multicultural understanding, or other topics, as requested by districts. Learning About Learning Laboratory Classroom, Developer, Co-Director, 1974-1979
Chosen as a national model in Learning Through the Arts, this laboratory operated as a K-10 alternative classroom. Arts processes and the Learning About Learning metacognitive method of teaching thinking were successfully used to teach academics and reach other school goals.

Learning to Learn, higher-level thinking skills program for Houston ISD. 1983-1988

Inner City Tutoring Program, a joint project of the Houston ISD and the Neighborhood Centers (a United Way agency), 1985-1987
Neighborhood teenagers were trained to tutor younger children in the same low-income, high-minority areas and serve as positive role models. Duties included year-round program and materials development and training of tutors and teachers.
Profitable Thinking, an elementary economics program sponsored by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, 1982-1985.
Activities included a research study of San Antonio young people’s understanding of work and economics, professional development and materials development to promote higher level thinking and entreprenuerial skills, and facilitation of yearly “show-and-tell” hosted at Trinity University.
